CBS Chicago’s Irika Sargent was elated to represent her network at the annual African Festival of the Arts.  Founded by Patrick Woodtor, the African Festival of the Arts (AFA) is an annual spectacular celebration of arts and culture from across the African Diaspora. The Festival is hosted each year by Africa International House, Inc.

According to AFA, it is the largest neighborhood festival in Chicago and the largest of its kind in the U.S.

Every year during Labor Day weekend, the Festival grounds in Chicago’s Washington Park recreates a  simulated African village, that houses all of the activities and art displayed at the festival. Attendees are guided through the Diaspora with interactive demonstrations, vibrant drumming, historical artifacts, colorful and rich fabrics, informative health and wellness workshops, as well as fascinating performances by legendary entertainers such as James Brown, Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Dwele, Goapele, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Kool and the Gang, amongst countless others,

“The mission of Africa International House, producer of the African Festival of the Arts, is to serve as a center that exposes and educates all peoples to the individual works and collective contributions of African cultures. Our mission is addressed through our flagship program, the African Festival of the Arts, and through other activities that promote African-based culture. Africa International House is an umbrella for linkages and exchanges of people from Africa and the African Diaspora.”

AFA also offers authentic African cuisine for all visitors to enjoy. There are unique jewelry pieces, natural oils, fabrics, clothing and other art pieces that are available for sale. All of which reflects our rich history as a people. This event is a staple within our community that should be cherished for providing people with an authentic look at African and African-American culture.
